Eugene is my friend who lived in Nigeria, he left Nigeria about 6 years ago to travel to Europe via land. He has done so through people smugglers. He’s experience details the harsh realities to survive; he spent seven days crossing the Sahara desert with other migrants, they had nothing in the wilderness and slept on the desert sand at night! He crossed the Mediterranean Sea along with 24 other migrants on a blow up boat, amongst them were new born babies, toddlers and people fleeing Syria. They spent 8 hours at sea and not everyone made it across.
His story is very compelling and really details the reality of migrants today. It’s a far cry from what is reported in the media.
At the time of his crossing, I was the only friend he has in Europe and throughout the journey he would call me when he reached different countries. As a young person living in London, the comparisons of our quality of life and what we have to do for a better life is a stark contrast.
